What is Halo-Therapy and What to expect in a Himalayan Salt Cave?

As this method of Holistic Healing is becoming more and more popular, you may have heard the term Halo-Therapy, but what exactly is it? Well, first off, “Halo” mean Salt in Greek, therefore some may refer to this treatment as Salt therapy. This therapy consists of breathing in tiny micro-sized particles of salt. You might ask yourself how can I benefit from halo therapy? When inhaling the particles of salt, they are able to penetrate the lungs, in return opening and disinfecting airways, making it easier to breathe. Most people claim they can take a deeper breath after just one 45-Minute session in our Salt Cave at Santé Healing Spa. This is also the case as there are negative ions found in the salt particles that help to clean and purify the air, increasing lung capacity. But the benefits don’t stop there.

Benefits of Halo-Therapy

  • Alleviates sneezing, coughing, shortness of breath (allergies)
  • Improves lung function
  • Improves respiratory ailments (Asthma, Bronchitis, COPD)
  • Decreases the need for inhalers and antibiotics
  • Helps treat skin conditions as salt is anti-inflammatory (Eczema, Psoriasis, Acne, Rosacea)
  • Eliminates bacteria and fungi
  • Fights against skin aging
  • Removes pathogen agents
  • Boosts mood & decreases stress (helps with depression)
  • Helps with Sleep Apnea, snoring & wheezing
  • Eases Sinus infections
  • Boosts immune function

What to Expect in a Himalayan Salt Cave

Now, you may be wondering what exactly takes place during a Halo-Therapy session. I can tell you firsthand as an owner of a Salt Cave Spa I know just how relaxing and beneficial it is. I always make time for at least 2 Halo-Therapy sessions per week. The key to being able to fully relax is wearing the proper attire. The salt cave can get a little chilly. It’s kept anywhere from 16-19 degrees to ensure bacteria does not spread. Not to worry, dressing warm will keep you cozy. I like to wear a tracksuit or my favourite comfy sweater and leggings and of course, you can’t forget the socks! As a woman, I tend to get cold easily and I don’t know about you, but if my feet are cold my whole body is cold. Good news though, you will be provided with a blanket to further enhance the coziness! The Salt Cave at Santé Healing Spa can hold up to 8 people at one time and everyone gets a reclining Gravity chair so don’t be surprised if you fall asleep!

Along with the trickling water coming from the water cascades, the soft lighting from the salt lamps throughout and the relaxing spa music, this is the perfect escape from all the daily stress.  I recommend leaving your phone in the locker and taking the time to unplug and unwind (talking is not permitted). Self meditation or reading a great book are my favourite ways to enjoy my time in the Himalayan Salt Cave. Curled up in my blanket with the salt in the air, I always try to focus on my breathing, taking slow deep breathes to really benefit from the treatment. Since the salt in the air is hard to see, I like to lick my lips after a Halo-Therapy session. You can literally taste the salt!

After my 45-Minute Halo-Therapy session, I always come out breathing easier and feeling more relaxed. Its really helped me with my annoying seasonal allergies and since I started the therapy about 3 years ago, I barely get sick, my skin has improved and overall, I just feel good! It’s now apart of my routine and I don’t ever plan to stop. I highly recommend everyone trying a Halo-therapy session, even if you don’t suffer from anything mentioned above, everyone can benefit from increasing immune function, especially during a time like this! A tip to remember when going to a Himalayan Salt Cave is to stay hydrated both before and after.
